ABOUT JAMES – AND WHY GREAT GUNS EXISTS
Why Great Guns?
Because life’s too short for excuses and too damn long to spend on the couch.
Growing up as one of three wild boys, adventure was our default setting. Gymnastics, rugby, judo, hiking, surfing—you name it, we did it.
Our parents were masterminds, really, keeping us so busy we barely had the energy to cause chaos at home.
Well played, Mum and Dad.
Our family globe-trotted from England to the Middle East to South Africa, trading rainy days for snorkeling in crystal waters, hiking Table Mountain, and tackling multi-day treks that were equal parts breathtaking and exhausting.

By my teens, I was crewing for the South African Sea Rescue Institute—surf launches? Terrifying.
Amazing. (Repeat.)
Then there were weekends of diving, kloofing (that’s extreme scrambling for you non-South Africans), and bonding over post-adventure beers.
Fast forward to returning to the UK with my wife, joining the Army Reserves (a.k.a. the TA, cue the STAB jokes), and eventually starting a family.
Enter the dad years. Somewhere along the line, life got...quiet. Too quiet. The wild stuff took a backseat. My energy flagged. My mindset suffered.
Ever been stuck in the day-in, day-out slog wondering, Is this it? Yeah, me too.
Spoiler: it wasn’t.
One walk turned into two. Then hikes. Then kayaking, climbing, and a newfound love of skiing—at 50, no less.
I started volunteering with a youth group, rediscovered my joy, and realized something big: I wasn’t alone in feeling stuck.
There are loads of people, especially dads and veterans, who’ve lost their spark and need a push to reignite it.
